Berlin Game is a 1983 spy novel by Len Deighton. It is the first novel in the first of three trilogies about Bernard Samson, a middle-aged and somewhat jaded intelligence officer working for the British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6). Berlin Game is part of the Game, Set and Match trilogy, being succeeded by Mexico Set and London Match, and followed by the Hook, Line and Sinker trilogy and the final Faith, Hope and Charity trilogy. Deighton's novel Winter (1987) is a prequel to the nine novels, covering the years 1900-1945 and providing the backstory to some of the characters.

The time is the early 1980s. A highly placed agent in East Germany codenamed 'Brahms Four' wants to come to the West. /cara-cheat-gem-game-mobile-legend.html. Brahms Four is one of Britain's most reliable, most valuable agents behind the Iron Curtain, and that he should be urgently demanding safe passage to the West sends a ripple of panic through the SIS. Bernard Samson, a former field agent, and now working behind a London desk, is tasked to undertake the crucial rescue. After all, it was Brahms Four who had once, nearly twenty years ago, saved his life.
But even before Samson sets out on his mission, he is confronted with undeniable evidence that there is a traitor among his colleagues working for the KGB. Clearly, it is someone close to the top, close to Samson himself. It could be Dicky Cruyer, his incompetent supervisor - whom Samson despises. It could be the American Bret Rensselaer, who has built his entire career around the work of Brahms Four — and who is spending an inordinate amount of time with Samson's wife, Fiona (also an intelligence officer). It could be Frank Harrington, the 'rezident' (head) of the Berlin field unit. In fact, it could be any member of the senior staff at London Central — even the Director-General himself.
Bernard travels to East Berlin to assist the escape of Brahms Four, and decides at the last moment to send Brahms Four out in his place. His suspicions of treachery prove well-founded when he is captured and subsequently confronted by his wife, who had defected and betrayed the operation.
Adaptations[edit]
Bernard Samson was played by Ian Holm and Fiona Samson by Mel Martin in a 1988 Granada Television adaptation of the Game, Set and Match trilogy, entitled Game, Set and Match, transmitted as twelve 60 minute episodes.[1] Filmed on location in Berlin and Mexico, the project included a large international cast with 3,000 extras and a budget of $8 million. While critically acclaimed, the ratings for the series were a disaster.[2] It was adapted by John Howlett and directed by Ken Grieve and Patrick Lau. It has not been officially released on VHS or DVD.
Other[edit]
The novel contains an early promulgation of the myth that President John F. Kennedy's famous 'Ich bin ein Berliner' remark actually translated to 'I am a jam doughnut'. In Berlin Game, the character Bernard Samson is told that he is berlinerisch:
'Ich bin ein Berliner,' I said. It was a joke. A Berliner is a doughnut. The day after President Kennedy made his famous proclamation, Berlin cartoonists had a field day with talking doughnuts.
In the preface to the reprint edition, Deighton notes that the novel is told in the highly subjective voice of the character of Bernard Samson, 'who is inclined to complain and exaggerate so that we have to interpret the world around him'. The author adds that 'Readers who take Bernard’s words literally are missing a lot of the intended content'.
In the prequel to the trilogy, Winter (1987), Deighton reminded his readers that the views of the characters were not necessarily those of the writer. The book's epigraph is a quote from James Jones: '..readers should remember that the opinions expressed by the characters are not necessarily those of the author..'
Trivia[edit]
In Quentin Tarantino's film Jackie Brown, Robert Forster's character, Max Cherry, can be seen with a copy of this novel.
In Arthur Penn’s film Target, Gene Hackman’s character, Walter Lloyd/Duncan (Duke) Potter, can be seen with a copy of this novel.

We're really sorry for the inconvenience, but please would you disable your ad-blocker? Our adverts are relevant and non-intrusive, they appear only at the top and the sides, never in the content. They don't include auto-playing audio either, they really won't spoil your enjoyment of the site. Thank you in advance!
Want to see this appeal go away forever? Support us on Patreon and we'll make that happen! Click the button on the left to find out more.
'I'm not running an ad-blocker!' -Refresh/reload the page, if you still see the panda or have other problems then click here to contact us immediately, thanks.
'Why are you doing this?' - Frankly we're struggling to make ends meet here especially since the site got more popular. The only way we can think to cover our costs is to run ads, but if so many of you keep blocking them..
'But I never click ads!' - Doesn't matter, you should only click them if they interest you. We get paid based on the number of views AND the number of clicks.
'You ruined the site!!!1! I want to send you hate mail!!' - Sure, click here.
Another fact - We have the software and the power to completely block adblock users from our site, but we're not going to, at least for now. We figure most of you would like to support us and you only installed Adblock because of other sites that aren't so considerate with their ad placement. Please, don't punish us because of them, in the seven or so years I've been a blogger/webmaster I've ALWAYS considered the need to balance monetisation with reader experience. I want to build an audience not send them away.
So go on, whitelist us and any other site you love. If it wasn't for ads, the internet would lose a whole chunk of really great niche content like this, which would be a real shame in our opinion.
Now, go ahead and read the page if you want to, but wouldn't it be much more convenient if you just whitelisted us? :)

World War 2 commandos eh? Those dashing men of steel, athletically charging around the battlefield, single handedly taking on tanks and bunkers despite their fondness for tobacco. In this game you will get to command a bunch of these heroes across several missions which take place over the course of the war. Don’t think you will be charging in all guns blazing however, this is a real time tactics game and only skilful planning and careful strategy will see you live to fight another day.
Installation
The game should install without any difficulty on a modern PC. If you’re installing from the original retail version, simply place the first disc in your computers optical drive and follow the on-screen prompts. If the games installer does not start automatically, browse to the CD in Computer/This PC and run the “Setup.exe” file manually.
If you’re installing the GoG.com download version, simply download and run the file as supplied by GoG.com.
Patching
The GoG.com version of the game is already pre-patched, but if you’re installing from the original retail CD, you will need to download and install the latest patch manually. You can download the patch here. To install the patch, simply unzip it and then run the file, the patch will then install automatically.
For both the GoG.com and retail versions, we also strongly recommend installing dgVoodoo2 if your PC has a DirectX 11 capable video card. You can find a tutorial on how to do this here. Commandos 3 is a DirectX game and the default installation directory (for the retail version) is C:Program Files (x86)EidosPyro StudiosCommandos 3 – Destination Berlin.
When configuring dgVoodoo2 for Commandos 3, be sure to turn Antialiasing (MSAA) to “Off” on the DirectX tab.
Tweaking visual quality
There’s just one visual quality option to set in-game. Start the game and from the main menu, choose “Options” and then “Video Options”. Now, set visual quality to “High Quality”. That’s all the settings you can tweak in the game itself.
Playing in widescreen or high resolution
This is a completely optional step and probably only of interest to advanced gamers. It’s possible with a bit of hacking to play the game in higher resolutions than the original developers intended. Basically, you will need to visit this page and follow the instructions given. Start by downloading the “Widescreen Patch Download” file. Once it’s downloaded, open it up in Windows Explorer/File Explorer. You will see a bunch of files named “1024x600_Commandos3.exe”, “1280x720_Commandos3.exe”, etc. Since we don’t recommend going higher than 720p with this game, choose either the 1024x600_Commandos3.exe or 1280x720_Commandos3.exe and copy it to the Commandos 3 installation folder (C:Program Files (x86)EidosPyro StudiosCommandos 3 – Destination Berlin by default).
Now, rename the original “Commandos3.exe” to something like “commandos3.old”. Now rename the file you just copied into the folder from the zip file to “commandos3.exe”.
Follow the instructions on the page to download and install the interface fix too. It works in the same way, remember to rename the old file first then rename the new file you’re copying in.
If you want to install the title banner fix file too, that goes in “C:Program Files (x86)EidosPyro StudiosCommandos 3 – Destination BerlinDataINTENDENCIA”.
When playing in high resolutions, the games title screens and videos are still in 800×600. Before the start of a mission you’re given a briefing and this will still appear in 800×600.
Troubleshooting
Problems saving games – Like many older games, Commandos 3 stores its save game files and other configuration information in its installation directory. If you installed the game into the program files or program files (x86) folders, you may find that the default Windows security settings prevent the game from saving any progress. To fix this problem set the permissions on your game folder so that your user account has full control/read write permissions. You can find a tutorial on how to configure folder permissions here.
Commandos 3 save games are stored in the “Output” folder within the games installation directory.
